Legislations
As a therapist you are responsible for the health and safety of yourself, colleagues, clients and anyone else who enters your place of work. It is important that you comply with all legislation that relates to you, as well as the Industry’s Code of Ethics and Code of Practice.

| Health & Safety at Work Act | Work in a healthy, safe and responsible way. Adhere to and help maintain the salon’s health and safety policy. Take care to maintain a good posture thtough treatments. Identify any risks or hazards and deal with them immediately, or immediately report as out of your control. Dispose of contaminated and non-contaminated waste, following the correct procedures. |
| The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations | Follow the salon’s housekeeping and hygiene practices for cleaning, sterilising and disposing of waste. Ensure adequate ventilation, lighting and temperature. Follow manufacturers’ instructions. Maintain facilities provided by the employer. Report any damage to the salon’s furnishings. |
| The Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations | Only use equipment if you have had the necessary training. Only use equipment for its intended purpose. Check equipment prior to use. Clean and put equipment away after use. Report any damage to equipment and remove from the salon. Ensure electrical equipment is PAT tested yearly and records of this kept. |
| The Manual Handling Operations Regulations | Only lift items within own capabilities. Follow the correct procedure for lifting objects: knees bent, straight back, using both hands hold the load close to your body. |
| The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations (PPE) | It is an employer’s responsibility to supply necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). As an employee you must use and maintain PPE supplied by your employer. For eyelash perming, disposable gloves and an apron may be worn for each treatment; a mask may also be worn by the therapist as the perming solution has strong fumes. As a therapist you also wear a uniform and sensible closed-in shoes. |
| The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) | You must store, handle, use and dispose of chemicals according to salon policy, manufacturers’ instructions and legal requirements. The products used during the perming process come under COSHH regulations. Report any differences between salon procedure and manufacturers’ instructions. Ensure you have adequate training in working with hazardous substances and follow the risk assessment provided by your employer. Make sure the client and self are protected when using chemicals. Store chemicals in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. |
| The Electricity at Work Regulations
| Only use equipment if you have had the necessary training. Only use equipment for its intended purpose. Check equipment prior to use. Clean and put equipment away after use. Report any damage to equipment and remove from the salon. Ensure equipment is PAT tested yearly and records of this kept. Ensure there are no trailing wires in treatment areas. Electrical equipment should be placed on a solid, stable trolley. Equipment should be within easy reach of the operator. No liquids should be near the equipment. Do not overload plug sockets. |
| The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations | When using a computer, ensure the following:
· set your monitor position correctly · take regular breaks · report any headaches, hand, wrist and neck aches. |
| The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) | Report any injuries, diseases or dangerous occurrences to the relevant person immediately. |
| First Aid at Work | Report injuries at work to the First Aider (or senior staff member). Add information accurately into the accident record book. Ensure the first aid box is kept up to date and stocked. |
| The Data Protection Act | Maintain client confidentiality at all times. Ensure client information is kept safe and protect, at all times, from any unauthorised persons. Ensure client data is relevant, accurate and up to date. Do not keep client data for longer than necessary. Allow client access to the data you hold on them, if requested. |
